Four traits of a good shared tool
- Used a few times a year, not every morning. The mower is the exception that still works, as long as the Saturdays are split fairly.
- Expensive enough to bother. Under about $80 the coordination costs more than the savings.
- Portable, or in a fixed spot everyone can reach without a truck.
- Not needed by everyone at the same moment. Snow blowers are hard; carpet cleaners are easy.

Do the neighbors need an account?+
Yes, a free one. Whoever opens your invite link creates an account in a few seconds and lands on the same calendar you see. Joining someone else's item is free for them too.
What if somebody breaks it?+
Agree the rule before it happens: whoever breaks it replaces it, or the group splits repairs under a certain amount. AllDibs keeps the chat and the receipts with the tool so the conversation has somewhere to live, but it does not hold money.
Can we book by the hour?+
