Long weekends in 2027, and whose turn it is at the cottage
The dates of every long weekend in 2027 and 2028 for the United States and for Ontario, followed by a rotation that hands the summer ones out among two, three or four families. Print it and put it on the fridge at the lake before anyone starts asking about Labor Day.
How the dates are worked out: a long weekend here is three or more days in a row that are a Saturday, a Sunday or a holiday day off. The United States tables use the eleven federal holidays and the federal rule that a Saturday holiday is taken on Friday and a Sunday one on Monday. The Ontario tables use the nine public holidays in the Employment Standards Act plus the August civic holiday. Your employer may give different days, so check before you book anything around one.

A summer rotation for two, three or four families
Take the long weekends between May and September in date order and deal them out like cards. Family A opens the season, Family B takes the next one, and so on round the table. The following summer everyone moves along one place, so the family that went second goes first.

A worked example: three families, two summers
A rotation looks fair on the day it is written. The trouble shows up a year later, when the calendar has a different number of long weekends than it did the summer before.
The assumptions: three families share a lake house in the United States, they rotate only the long weekends between May and September, and each summer the order moves along one place. In 2027 there are 4 of those weekends. In 2028 there are 3, because the Fourth of July is a Tuesday.

Count them up. Over the two summers Family A has three long weekends and the other two have two each, which is as even as seven weekends split three ways can be. But look at Labor Day: it goes to Family A both years. Nobody cheated. The order moved along one place exactly as agreed, and a summer that was one weekend shorter brought the same family back to the last slot.
There are two honest fixes. Rotate by holiday name instead of by position, so Labor Day itself passes from A to B to C, and accept that the totals will drift a little. Or keep the dealing order and let Family A hand Labor Day to whoever has had it least. Either works. What does not work is finding this out in the last week of August.

Questions about long weekends
How many long weekends are there in 2027?+
In the United States, ten of the federal holidays make a three-day weekend in 2027, and four of those fall between May and September: Memorial Day, Juneteenth, the Fourth of July and Labor Day. Veterans Day and Thanksgiving both land on a Thursday, so they only stretch if you take the Friday. In Ontario there are seven, three of them in cottage season: Victoria Day, the August civic holiday and Labour Day. Your own count depends on which days your employer gives you.
Is the Fourth of July a long weekend in 2027?+
Yes. July 4, 2027 is a Sunday, and when a federal holiday lands on a Sunday the day off moves to Monday. That makes Saturday, July 3 to Monday, July 5 a three-day weekend for anyone whose employer follows the federal calendar. In 2028 the Fourth is a Tuesday, so there is no long weekend unless you take the Monday as well.
Is Canada Day a long weekend in 2027?+
Not by itself. July 1, 2027 is a Thursday, so the holiday sits in the middle of the week. Take Friday, July 2 off and you have four days, Thursday to Sunday, which is what plenty of cottage families will do. In 2028 Canada Day falls on a Saturday, and in Ontario the employer picks the substitute day off, so ask before you plan around a Friday or a Monday.
Is the August civic holiday a statutory holiday in Ontario?+
No. The first Monday in August is not one of the nine public holidays in Ontario's Employment Standards Act, so an employer does not have to give it. Many do, and banks and government offices usually close, which is why it is on this page: for most families it is the long weekend in the middle of the summer. In 2027 it is Monday, August 2.
How do families split long weekends at a shared cottage?+
The plain way is a written rotation. List the summer long weekends in date order, give them out in turn, and next year start with the family that was second this year. Decide in advance what happens in a year with an extra long weekend or one fewer, because the count changes: the United States has four between May and September in 2027 and three in 2028. Write down whether swaps are allowed and how much notice one needs.
